The Funerary Art Show will showcase a collection of work created by artists who, through grief, have developed a visual conversation to help refigure or honor those who have died. The work exhibited investigates the complex relationships between the living and the dead. The collection includes urns, reliquaries, biodegradable urns, memorial stone, mixed media, spirit drawings. Media will consist of blown glass, cast glass, ceramic, oil, pastel, pencil, and stone. Artists include: Nancy Arthur-McGehee, Buzz Blodgett, John Chandler, Cathy Coverley, Vicky De Long, Susan E. Roden, Joel Sharp, BK Simpson, and Patricia Yockey.
The Funerary Art Show exhibit runs from October 13, to November 3, 2007. Public reception is concurrent with Ray at Night, San Diego’s largest monthly art event, Saturday October 13 from 6:00- 10:00pm.
Dia de las Muertos closing event with guest speakers will be Friday, November 2, 5:00-8:00pm. Speakers will include: Fielding McGehee, Publisher of Reivers Press, will discuss memorialization in the United States; Dr. Rebecca Moore, Religious Studies Scholar, will discuss cross-cultural forms of memorialization; and John Chandler, Rekii Master, with a talk titled, Contact with the Spirit World.
